From June 11 to August 6, 2026, a period of approximately two months, we hosted an internship for a second-year student from the Department of Building Technologists at Monotsukuri Institute of Technologists.

Until now, our internships have mainly been short programs of two to three days for high school and technical college students. This time we hosted a student for around two months, which made for a rather different experience from our previous programs.

What the Internship Involved

Over the course of the internship, the student took part in drafting with AutoCAD, quantity take-off, and dimension measurement using 3D models, supporting our design work.

In a short program, the participant generally works through exercises prepared in advance. Because we had more time on this occasion, the student was able to take part in the flow of our day-to-day design work itself. Rather than drafting alone, we hope the experience conveyed how each drawing connects to the steps that come before and after it.

Several of Our Engineers Served as Supervisors

Because the internship ran for two months, several of our engineers took on the role of supervisor. As a result, it also became a valuable opportunity for our own staff to gain new insights.

We asked the engineers who supervised the internship for their impressions.

What I had in mind was giving the student a feel for the real atmosphere of the site and of day-to-day practice — something that is hard to convey through classroom study alone. Being able to watch, at close range, the serious expression on their face as they worked through a task, and their understanding deepening day by day, gave those of us on the receiving side a real sense of reward.

Working out how the team as a whole would support the student became an occasion to look again at how we coordinate our everyday work and how we go about developing our junior staff. I was struck by how quickly the student grew, and at the same time it left me feeling that our capacity to host interns is getting stronger.

Challenges and How I Addressed Them

I ran into problems such as losing data because I forgot to save my CAD files, struggling with calculations and unit conversions that I am not good at, and discrepancies between drawings when changes were made. In response, I made a point of saving frequently, double-checking my figures on a calculation sheet, and reviewing the whole set of drawings to confirm that everything was consistent.

What I Learned and What Comes Next

I learned a sense of responsibility — that “behind every drawing there are people on site” — and how important it is to work with clear reasons for what you do. From now on I want to stay aware of where my own checking is weak and of my own habits, and to keep explaining things with reasons, double-checking my work, and drafting with the whole picture in mind, at university as well.
